What is the best type of defensive firearm for a novice female?

I am thinking of buying a firearm for personal protection. I am a bit small, and not even very comfortable with the idea of having a gun. But if I do buy one, what would be the best type?

The best you can do is go to a shooting range and see if you can shoot several different guns to find one that suits you best. Some weapons are bad if you have short fingers. If you are a woman so strong, then a gun with less than a shot, may be better suited. Up to 22 can kill if the fire several rounds at the target, but a 44 magnum not good if you can not handle the recoil and completely miss the target. Do not be afraid to ask questions at the range or a gun shop. Consider the type of safety gear, especially if you are uncomfortable with a firearm. The size of your body, the size of their hands and their feelings of comfort are all therefore important. Some firearms, as the Colt .45 semi-automatic carried cocked and locked. They are in firing position and a trigger (light, because the hammer is cocked) is all it takes to shoot. Smith and Wesson pullt have to have a hard shot (double action), then the subsequent rounds are easier as the gun automatically placed the hammer in firing position for testing. Ask questions on the range or gun shop.
