Paul McCartney has not been (and is) just a singer of ballads. He wrote all sorts of different types of songs ( "Helter Skelter "for an obvious example) and is a brilliant bassist and arranger of songs. But there is a reason he is so well known for his ballads. It was (and still is) an incredibly gifted composer of ballads. These are the seven biggest ballads with The Beatles in alphabetical order.
"And I Love Her "- This song from 1964's Night A Hard Day's foreshadowed the rest of the songs on this list.
"Blackbird" – Oh, The White Album. The best album ever. I still remember the first time I ever heard this song. I listened to The White Album for the first time and when I got to "Blackbird" I actually stopped the album and played this song. I just heard again, immediately. I was that blown away by it. Today, I still think it is equally great.
"Here, There, and Everywhere" – I heard that McCartney is his favorite all the songs he has written. If you have not heard this yet, then you must buy Revolver now and check it out. It is a beautiful song.
"Hey Jude "- Perhaps my favorite song ever. It is a beautiful and moving song that still rings true today as it did in 1968.
"I Will" – Another White Album treasure. Beautiful melody. Just a perfect song and not even two minutes. This is one of the things I love about the Beatles songs, they do not extend out to artificially "Epic." If a song is best suited to be less than 2 minutes, then that's what they have left.
"Let It Be" – The Beatles' most enduring songs. Tribute must also go to George Harrison for his great guitar solo.
"Yesterday" – sure, he overplayed. But there's a reason for that. It is a rather timeless song. And many people forget that when it came out it was actually not as "secure" as it may seem today. It was the first time a group rock channels used in a song this way. As always, the Beatles were innovators.
