SOFT began when the Department of Defense began looking to replace the ALICE (All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment) Pack in 1994. MOLLE is an acronym for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying equipment. It is used to define the current generation of carrier bags back, jackets and accessories used by Marines and soldiers. The modular system is derived from the use of PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) webbing, rows of heavy nylon sewn on the jacket or bag to allow the seizure of various MOLLE compatible pouches and accessories. This method of attachment became the standard for modular tactical gear, replacing the click and stick system used in the earliest modular systems. MOLLE Gear is manufactured by several companies such as Blackhawk, Blackwater Gear, Armor Holdings and others.
SOFT The term is used not only to describe the specific system, but has become a generic description for all charges bearing systems and subsystems that use the PALS webbing woven modular pouch attachment. Most systems can use MOLLE and PALs interchangeably. Any system that uses methods for fixing modular and can be used with U.S. components SOFT general question is often regarded as "MOLLE-compatible" or is called a "soft" system. More and more military and nonmilitary manufacturers MOLLE integrate technology in outdoor equipment. There are plenty of MOLLE pouches available for attachment to MOLLE vests and compatible packaging. They come in many shapes and sizes and are often cast to the specific item to be made as the pistol magazines, radio, handcuffs, a gas mask, pop flare, canteen, etc.
